Born January 13, 1987 in Maryland, Chambers, 38, of Maryland, moved with his family to Massachusetts before his junior year of high school.

As a senior at Westfield High School, he was the Massachusetts 50 Freestyle State Champion and came in third at the 2005 State Championships in the 100 freestyle. He graduated in 2005 and attended UMass Amherst on the swimming and diving team.

Chambers enlisted in the Navy on May 17, 2012, and graduated from boot camp at Recruit Training Command Great Lakes, Ill., in July 2012. He served with West Coast-based SEAL units since graduating from SEAL qualification training in Coronado, California, in 2014. Chris was assigned to the Navy's SEAL Team 3.

His awards and decorations include the Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal with Combat "C," three Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medals, Army Achievement Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, and other personal and unit awards.

On the evening of Jan. 11, S01 Chambers, 37, and SO2 Nathan Ingram, 27, both assigned to a West Coast-based Naval Special Warfare unit. Both were reported missing at sea while they were conducting a night-time seizure of a vessel illegally transporting advanced lethal aid from Iran to resupply Houthi forces in Yemen.
