Bronze Star : For heroic service as machine gunner of a landing craft of a reconnaissance platoon, Underwater Demolition Team 9, engaged in a daylight reconnaissance of landing beaches and beach defences of enemy Japanese forces on Leyte Island, Oct. 19, 1944. Unwavering in the face of a barrage of machinegun and rifle fire concentrated upon his craft from the island, Scoggins relentlessly delivered accurate fire on designated targets on the beach, contributing materially to the safety of other members of his platoon swimming toward the shore. His skill and intrepidity were instrumental in enabling his platoon to succeed in its hazardous mission, and his outstanding devotion to duty reflects the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
