While growing up in Cohasset, MA, Michael attended Thayer Academy in Braintree and went on to graduate from Denison University in Ohio.

Michael, a chief Naval Special Warfare operator, enlisted in the Navy in 2009 and became a Navy SEAL three years later. Among his many military awards and decorations was the Silver Star, awarded for valor in combat.

Other military decorations Michael received include the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, three Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, the Army Achievement Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, three Sea Service Deployment Ribbons, and the NATO Medal.
